How to do a subcutaneous injection

(Vitamin syringes must be refrigerated)

  1. Wash your hands.  We recommend before injection leaving the vitamin syringe out for 5 minutes to help get to room temperature prior to injection for comfort.

  2. Select the injection site and clean it with an alcohol pad.

  3. Draw up the correct dose in a syringe or prefilled pen.

  4. Grasp the skin at least an inch, and insert the needle at a 90-degree angle OR 45-degree angle.

  5. Push the plunger to inject the medication.

  6. If there is bleeding, apply a bandage and dispose of the syringe and needle.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTIONS:

  • Depends on your body habitus. Look where you have the most fat tissue on the areas of recommended injection sites.  The saying of if you can "pinch an inch" is where you can inject (Per diagram)

  • Due to vitamin solution being slightly thicker, we recommend injecting in the "front of the thigh" or "top of buttocks" (Per Diagram) as these areas have shown to be more comfortable post injection.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER INJECTION:

  • Vitamin injections are usually safe but please be mindful that side-effects/adverse affects can occur and if so, will usually resolve in a 1-2 days.  Here are possible side-effects and risks:

    • Local reactions such as redness, swelling, and pain at the injection site.

    • Risk of localized infection at the injection site.

    • Lipodystrophy (fat tissue changes, including lumps or dents at the injection site).

    • Allergic reactions (if severe recommend to seek medical care ASAP)

    • Pain near the injection site for 1 to 2 days afterward.
